How Clearlight Designs went from toxic backlinks to #1 for lighted mirrors

An offshore SEO agency left Clearlight Designs with a pile of PBN links, falling rankings and no tracking. We cleaned up the link profile, fixed the onsite basics and took lighted mirrors to position 1.

The problem

Clearlight Designs manufactures illuminated mirrors for clients like the Shangri-La Hotel, Sofitel and David Jones. Wanting more visibility and more leads, they engaged an outsourced SEO agency overseas. A few months in, it was clear the agency was up to no good.

Large numbers of PBN and poor-quality backlinks were appearing, and they were starting to bite. Rankings kept dropping and traffic followed. With no tracking on the site, there was no way to see what it was doing to leads. The brief was blunt: get our traffic back, and while you're at it, increase our leads.

What we did

The fix was relatively simple in the end. First cab off the rank was a comprehensive backlink audit. We then went through the SEO basics, metadata, heading tags and page copy across every key page, and found keyword cannibalisation: multiple pages competing for the same search terms.

1Audited and disavowed toxic linksWe identified a large number of high-risk links, poor-quality and irrelevant domains using exact match anchors, and uploaded a disavow file to Google Search Console.
2Fixed metadata and cannibalisationMetadata was reworked so every page targeted a distinct high-value keyword, backed by on-page copy optimisation to make sure those terms were present.
3Rebuilt the lighted mirror pagesThe lighted mirror category pages were updated to support the new metadata, with TF-IDF optimisation giving Google the context it needed.
4Citations and authority linksMajor web 2.0, business directory and local citations were built, and a link acquisition campaign placed links on relevant, high-quality domains to rebuild authority.
5Set up lead trackingEvents and goals in Google Tag Manager now track every individual quote form, so leads are finally measurable.

The results

Clearlight Designs now ranks in position 1 for its target keyword, lighted mirrors, as well as related terms like bathroom lighted mirrors. Almost immediately we saw SERP visibility lift, and with it more visitors and more leads from organic search, now properly tracked.

With the link profile clean and tracking in place, the rankings have somewhere solid to grow from. The client was happy enough to refer his brother's business, which is now reaping the same rewards.
